Selecting Battery for your LiteWing Drone

Selecting the right battery for LiteWing is crucial for ensuring stable flight performance, longer flight time, and overall durability. Since LiteWing is a compact, WiFi-controlled ESP32-S3 drone, the battery must balance power, weight, and discharge rate for optimal operation. Below, we’ll guide you through key factors to consider when choosing a battery and provide some recommended options.

Key Factors to Consider

Voltage (V) – 3.7V LiPo Battery

LiteWing operates on a single-cell LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery with a nominal voltage of 3.7V. The battery charging and power management circuit is designed for this particular setup, so make sure to select the 1S LiPo battery with the specifications recommended below.

Capacity (mAh) – Recommended: 300mAh to 1300mAh

Battery Capacity

Battery capacity determines how long the drone can stay in the air before needing a recharge.

  • A higher-capacity battery (e.g., 800mAh - 1300mAh) provides a longer flight time but also adds more weight, which can affect manoeuvrability.

  • A lower-capacity battery (e.g., 300mAh - 800mAh) reduces weight but may limit flight duration.

Discharge Rate (C-Rating) – Minimum 20C

The discharge rate (C-rating) defines how quickly the battery can supply current. LiteWing's motors require a minimum of 20C to ensure stable power delivery. Using a lower C-rated battery can cause voltage drops during flight, leading to unstable performance.

Connector Type – XH2.50

Battery Connector

LiteWing uses a JST connector (XH2.5) for battery connection. Ensure that the battery you choose comes with the correct connector or use an adapter if necessary. There is no standardisation on JST connector polarity. So depending on the manufacturer, the polarity may be different. So, before plugging in the battery, make sure the battery polarity matches the polarity marking on the PCB.

If the polarity is wrong, you can either remove the crimp terminal from the JST connector shell carefully using a tweezer or pin and reinsert them in the correct orientation, or use a battery with a connector having the correct orientation. If you choose to correct the wiring, be extra careful because short-circuiting LiPo batteries can be dangerous.

Weight – Recommended: Below 30g

The battery weight directly impacts the drone’s flight dynamics. A battery heavier than 30g may affect stability and responsiveness. It’s best to keep the weight within the 20g - 30g range for optimal performance. We would recommend using the one that weighs around 20 g.
