signal circuit needed
June 27, 2020 - 7:17pm

Hi, first time post so please bear with me.

I need a device that will register inside the house whether the garage door is open or closed.

I have no idea how to make this. I have some minor electronics experience and understand simple circuits.

The problem is this. There is mains power (240v) both in the garage and the house, but I cannot connect signal wires between them. The roll up garage door is remote operated, but I cant see the garage / workshop door from the house, so I have to keep walking around to see if its closed or open for the night.

I need something that will be operated by the roll up door's position (I already have a roller microswitch on that) but will signal a couple of leds inside the house so a green light will show closed, a red light will show open.

I've ben told its simple, but the man could not build it so I have come here for help.

Thanks

Hi sunnybob, welcome to Hobbyst world, What i was able to understand is, you want to make a device which can let you know, whether your garage door is open/closed. You can do this using multiple ways. Some of those is given below:

1. You can use a Limit switch in door, which can take input of door status and then connect this with a comperator like LM358 to form a comperator circuit, so that at the output end you can connect some LEDs to know the status.

2. If you want to do the same thing using microcontroller, then you can also do this connect an Arduino with Limit switch and output LEDs. You can also connect multiple LEDs for open/close notifications. You can also use wireless module optionally for getting notifications remotely at your place.

Thank you for your reply.

My problem is I have almost no understanding of what you have described. I can follow a purchase list, I can follow an instruction and assembly guide, but I have no idea exactly which parts I need or how to assemble them.

I have a switch on the door which can tell if it is open or closed, but I have no way of transferring that info to inside the house. It would have to be a wireless connection.

 Thanks.

Hi sunnybob, have you done some basic experiments in electronic circuits or arduino? like blinking the leds, timers etc. If not, then i suggest to do some following the links below. After that, you will be able to make your device very easily. Check out one simillar project

I can follow the instructions for the door alarms, but this not what I need.

The crucial part I need is the wireless transmission of the go / nogo signal to the remote box. I cant find out how to do this.

Thanks

for the wireless part, you can follow the below links

https://circuitdigest.com/microcontroller-projects/interfacing-nrf24l01-with-arduino-transmitter-and-receiver-tutorial

The above link shows you how you can communicate with the NRF module. The NRF modules are cheap but there range is limited.

If you need some range you can use the high power version of the NRF module or you can do it with an RFM69HCW module.

That is close to what I want, thank you. But looking at the cost of 2 arduinos and all the other parts needed is more than I want pay for a simple warning light. I will have to think of something else.

Then you can try this circuit with the 433MHZ transmitter and receiver its cheap, and its commonly available.

https://circuitdigest.com/electronic-circuits/rf-transmitter-and-receiver-circuit-diagram

but let me tell you, with a perfect line of sight you can achieve a range of 50 meters max. it's the max range i was able to achieve with a proper antenna

Thanks, that looks like something I can do. Distance is only 20 metres at most, but it is through the building which has reinforced concrete and clay brick construction.

I shall have to find out the local costs of parts.

 Thank you.

BOB I HAVE THE SYSTEM IN MY HOUSE FORGET ABOUT 240

WHAT I DID WAS MAGNETIC SWITH ON DOOR AND POWER 4 AA BATTERIES AND A RED LED

FOR YOU THE PROBLEM WILL BE TO BRING A SMALL DOBLE (2)WIRE TO THE SWITH TO THE DOOR

MAGNETIC SWITH ,BATTERY HOLDER AND RED LED YOU CAN GET ON AMAZON

MAGNETIC SWITH COME WITH NORMALY OPEN OR NRMALY CLOSE (SAME SWITH

SO WHEN OPEN THE DOOR THE SWITH CLOSE END SEND POWER TO A LED WHEN IS CLOSE

THE SWITH IS NORMALY OPEN

Tony, There is no way to get a signal wire from the garage door to inside the house.

I open and close the door with the normal remote key fob but I can not see the door when I am inside the house.

It must be either R/C signal or bluetooth

isunnybob : i have mine at least 15 metters from the house . i,m talking about copper wire very thin ( double becouse goes to the magnetic swich )  what you under stand for signal wire ?

if you can,t pass the wire you have to go to wifi which is expensive sorry .You mean that you can,t bring a small diameter wire

from the garage to the house ?

At the beginner i use cloth pin instead of magnetic switch. if this doesn,t work tell me wi look for another solution

i also could not see my doors (i have two ) i also put a mirrow on a tree so i could see the doors from home

pleace let me know how is going. i speak spanish, italian ,french, portuges ,and a little of japones

Tony, i speak only english, so you are very good to speak all those languages.

I cannot use a mirror. I cannot run wire all around the outside of the house.

There is 240 volts in the garage and in the house, but I can not run more wires through the small tubes that go underground.

The only way I can do it is wire free.

OK HERE WE GO GET A FLASH LIGHT ,OR A OLD RADIO PLAY MUSIC OR WHATEVER .CONNECTED TO 224 VOLT IN THE GARAGE AND USE THE ROLLER SWITCH TO GO , THE FLASH LIGHT OR THE RADIO TO LIGHT OR PLY WHEN THE DOOR IS OPEN IF YOU CAN DO THIS I GIVE MORE DETAIL

WHEN I GET TO THE HOUSE I HAVE A BOTTOM TO LOWER THE DOOR , YOUR IS THE SAME ?

I OPENED WHIT THE REMOTE AND THEN I CLOSE WHEN I GET TO THE HOUSE .WE LEAVE THE REMOTE IN THE CAR

THE RADIO DOESN,T NEED TO BE OUTSIDE ONLY THE SPEAKER .A HORN WOULD BE NO GOOD FOR THE NOISE

TELL ME THE SYSTEM , AND I HAVE OTHER IDEA

Tony, none of those tricks are any good to me. The garage is my workshop. It is open most of the day. I close it if I go out, or if it starts to rain, or i see anyone walking around looking suspicious. Sometimes its open all day, sometimes it is opened and closed  many times each day.

But at the end of the day, when I go to bed, I cant remember if it is open or closed, and I have to walk around the corner of the house to check. In the winter when it is cold and raining I dont want to have to do this. I just want 2 indicator lamps indoors, one for closed, one for open

I dare not leave it open overnight because of snakes and rats getting inside.

I CAN IMAGE THAT THE GARAGE DOOR IS IN THE BACK OF THE HOUSE ,AND YOU HAVE NO WINDOWS IN THE BACK

SO TAKE THE REMOTE WITH YOU AND CLOSE WHEN YOU GO TO BED .OR USE WHAT DEBASHIS SAY

MY REMOTE IS PORTATIL AND IF YOU WANT, ISN,T DIFFICUL TO GET ANOTHER FROM THE COMPANY OF THE DOOR OPENER

MINE HAS A RAY OF INFRARED LIGHT ACROSS THE DOOR THE LIGHT WHEN SAMETHING CROSSED IT ,I HAVE MORE, BUT I,M READY TO GIVE UP TONY

In signal processing, a signal is a function that conveys information about a phenomenon. In electronics and telecommunications, it refers to any time varying voltage, current or electromagnetic wave that carries information. A signal may also be defined as an observable change in a quality such as quantity.

Any quality, such as physical quantity that exhibits variation in space or time can be used as a signal to share messages between observers. According to the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, a signal can be audio, video, speech, image, sonar and radar-related and so on. In an other effort of defining a signal, anything that is only a function of space, such as an image, is excluded from the category of signals. Also, it is stated that a signal may or may not contain any information.

In nature, signals can be actions done by an organism to alert other organisms, ranging from the release of plant chemicals to warn nearby plants of a predator, to sounds or motions made by animals to alert other animals of food. Signalling occurs in all organisms even at cellular levels, with cell signaling. Signaling theory, in evolutionary proposes that a substantial driver for evolution is the ability for animals to communicate with each other by developing ways of signaling. In human engineering, signals are typically provided by a sensor, and often the original form of a signal is converted to another form of energy using a transducer. For example, a microphone converts an acoustic signal to a voltage waveform, and a speaker does the reverse.
