South Korea's Seoul Semiconductor is evaluating plans to establish a manufacturing facility in India, with discussions underway with multiple state governments, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat. The optoelectronics company is assessing possible sites as India sharpens its pitch to global electronics and semiconductor-linked manufacturers under the next phase of its chip and electronics manufacturing policy framework, and may seek support under the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 programme.
Tamil Nadu has a deep electronics manufacturing base and strong port access, Karnataka has a large technology talent pool and existing electronics design ecosystem, and Gujarat has positioned itself aggressively for semiconductor and electronics investments, including through central and state-level support structures. The choice of site would likely depend on the balance between incentive visibility, customer proximity, supplier development and the speed at which local operations can be brought online. While a final investment decision has not been announced, the talks indicate that India's state-level competition for electronics manufacturing projects remains active, particularly among states that already have semiconductor, electronics, EV and advanced manufacturing clusters.
The proposed India entry would place Seoul Semiconductor in a market where demand for LED, display, automotive lighting, consumer electronics and industrial electronics components is expanding alongside domestic manufacturing incentives. India's policy challenge remains converting interest from global manufacturers into committed capital expenditure, operating facilities and a local supplier base that can support scale.
