Renesas Unveils Gen6 DDR5 RCD Hitting 9600 MT/s

Renesas has announced the RRG5006x, which is the industry’s first 6th-generation Registered Clock Driver (RCD) for DDR5 Registered Dual In-line Memory Modules (RDIMMs). It achieves 9600 Mega Transfers Per Second (MT/s), outperforming Renesas’ Gen5 RCD by 800 MT/s. The chip maintains backward compatibility with 5th-generation platforms.

The RCDs support AI, HPC, and LLM workloads by delivering improved signal integrity and power efficiency. Its expanded Decision Feedback Equalization architecture features 8 taps and a 1.5 mV granularity. Renesas’ Decision Engine Signal Telemetry and Margining (DESTM) technology provides real-time signal quality indication, margin visibility, and diagnostic feedback.

Demonstrating real-world adoption, Samsung is to integrate this new RCD into its DDR5 DIMMs. Indong Kim, VP of DRAM Product Planning, Samsung Electronics, said, “We are now excited to integrate Gen6 RCD into our DDR5 DIMMs, across multiple SoC platforms to support the growing demands of AI, HPC, and other memory-intensive workloads." Samples of the RRG5006x RCD are available to select customers for now, and full-scale production is anticipated for 2027.
