Mural is a DIY wall-drawing machine that uses markers to create wall designs. The creator wanted a cheaper wall plotter that could turn walls into canvases. So, he built Mural as an open-source project that costs less than $100 and is easy for anyone to make and use. Mural runs on an ESP32 microcontroller with Nema 17 stepper motors, a servo motor for pen movement, and a USB-C power delivery board for power management. It’s designed to deliver high-precision drawings with a self-contained system that will be attached to the wall with two thumbtacks. The body of the Mural is 3D printed and can be controlled through a browser without requiring any complicated setup.

One of the challenges he faced was to get the precise drawings on the wall; he solved that with the use of Nema 17 motors. And with better algorithms, he solved the distorted edges on large designs.

While Mural is an exciting project, it still has some limitations. The creator says he needs to fix the accuracy issue so it can produce images with more precision and accuracy. Mural is open-source, and the creator says he is always open to ideas. If you’re a maker with tips, tricks, or ways to improve it, he’d love to hear from you.
