BeagleBoard has introduced the PocketBeagle 2, a compact and affordable single-board computer (SBC) designed for developers, students, and hobbyists. It retains the small form factor of its predecessor, measuring 55 x 35 mm while improving performance and features. With a focus on embedded applications, IoT devices, and education, the PocketBeagle 2 offers an efficient platform for prototyping and development.
The board is powered by the Texas Instruments AM6232 system-on-chip (SoC), featuring dual 64-bit Arm Cortex-A53 cores running at up to 1.0 GHz. This is a notable upgrade from the original PocketBeagle, which used a single-core Cortex-A8 processor. Additionally, the SoC includes a Cortex-M4F microcontroller for real-time processing, and a dual-core Programmable Real-Time Unit (PRU) for specialized tasks. A separate MSPM0L1105 Cortex-M0+ microcontroller provides 12-bit ADC functionality, enabling precise analog input readings. PocketBeagle 2 comes with 512 MB of LPDDR4 memory, 72 expansion pin headers, a USB-C port for power and data, and a microSD card slot for storage. The board includes pre-soldered headers for easier connectivity, a 3-pin UART debug port compatible with Raspberry Pi debug probes, and a built-in LiPo battery charger. It also offers multiple user-programmable LEDs and power indicators to assist with debugging and monitoring system status.
With these improvements, PocketBeagle 2 delivers better performance and flexibility while maintaining compatibility with existing PocketBeagle expansions where possible. Its low power consumption, small size, and enhanced processing capabilities make it a practical choice for embedded system developers looking for a cost-effective SBC for a wide range of applications.
