TICKEY is a compact clip-on gadget that combines a 3.7-inch, 720 × 480 color e-paper display with an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. Instead of behaving like a normal LCD or OLED screen, its e-paper display is designed to keep a static image visible without continuously consuming display power. Users can show pixel art, photos, digital badges, QR codes, notes or personal information, making TICKEY more like a reusable digital card than a conventional portable display. The color e-paper panel supports 48+ native colors, while the ESP32-S3 handles the processing, wireless communication and display control. The project is currently being presented on Kickstarter as a customizable display that can be clipped onto bags, used at events or carried as a personal digital accessory.
Under its slim body, TICKEY packs surprisingly capable hardware. The device measures approximately 111 × 62 × 3.8 mm, weighs around 45 grams, and includes a 360 mAh battery, USB-C charging, 8 MB of RAM/Flash, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. NFC can be used for sharing digital information, while QR codes displayed on the screen can connect the physical device to websites, social profiles or portfolios. The ESP32-S3 is especially interesting for makers because TICKEY is built around the ESP32 ecosystem and the company is promoting open-source firmware, giving developers more opportunities to experiment with the hardware. Refresh speed is also a key part of the design: the manufacturer lists roughly 1 second for monochrome content, around 3 seconds for faster color refreshes and up to about 13 seconds for a full refresh, depending on the display mode.
TICKEY does have some limitations. Its e-paper display is nowhere near as fast as an OLED, so it is not intended for video or smooth animations, and the company states that the device is not waterproof. Its strength is displaying information that changes occasionally while using very little power to maintain the image. That makes applications such as digital name badges, event passes, QR-code displays, pixel-art accessories, desk reminders and IoT information displays much more practical. The real appeal of TICKEY is therefore not just the color e-paper screen, but the combination of ESP32-S3, wireless connectivity, NFC, battery power and a programmable low-power display in a device only a few millimeters thick. For makers, it also provides an interesting starting point for building custom applications around a tiny computer that can carry its own screen almost anywhere.
