TI Launches Industry-First Integrated Multi-Cell Gauge

Texas Instruments (TI) has unveiled two new battery fuel gauges (BQ41Z90 and BQ41Z50). These gauges use Dynamic Z-Track™, a predictive algorithm that is known to deliver industry-leading accuracy in monitoring battery charge and health. Setting them apart from traditional methods, this adaptive tech can achieve state-of-charge and state-of-health readings within 1% error, which helps extend battery run time by as much as 30%.

With devices like laptops, e-bikes, and portable medical equipment needing more and more power, accurately monitoring batteries has become a necessity for reliable performance.  Dynamic Z-Track’s self-updating model can adapt to changing loads, like those from AI applications, giving engineers a dependable, real-time representation of battery performance.

The BQ41Z90 is the first single-chip solution in the industry to integrate fuel gauge, monitor, and protection functions for 3-to-16 lithium-ion cells. This reduces board space by up to 25%. BQ41Z50 supports 2-to-4 cells and is already available in production quantities, while BQ41Z90 is available in pre-production quantities. Evaluation modules for the BQ41Z90 and BQ41Z50 are priced at $170 and $155 USD, respectively.
