In 3D modeling, precise and fluid navigation around a digital object is essential. Even though there are plenty of commercial solutions available, none of them are pocket-friendly. That's where a DIY solution can shine without making a hole in your pocket. In a recent video, the YouTube channel Just Make It showcases a custom-built SpaceMouse that replicates the functionality of commercial 3D navigation tools using affordable, accessible components.

The core of the device relies on Adafruit’s BNO055 sensor, a 9-axis absolute orientation sensor that combines accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer data onboard to provide real-time motion tracking without complex sensor fusion algorithms, to detect orientation in space, paired with an Arduino Pro Micro for USB HID communication. By interpreting motion data from the sensor, the device allows for intuitive model manipulation in CAD software like Fusion 360, while a tactile button adds support for panning and zooming actions. The core concept is similar to the DIY Airmouse we built a while ago.

Unlike conventional input methods that rely on keyboard shortcuts and mouse drags, this setup enables simultaneous multi-axis movement, significantly improving workflow speed and reducing fatigue during long design sessions. It enhances precision, accelerates view adjustments, and offers a tactile, ergonomic way to navigate complex 3D spaces, making it especially valuable for iterative design, inspection, and fine-tuning tasks.
