Researchers have developed an affordable electric bandage that significantly speeds up the healing of chronic wounds. Tested on diabetic mice, this new bandage showed wounds healed 30% faster than with traditional bandages.
The bandage features water-powered, electronics-free dressings (WPEDs) with flexible electrodes and a biocompatible battery. A drop of water activates the battery, creating an electric field that promotes healing for hours. This process is similar to electrolysis, where the water and salt (NaCl) between the electrodes produce an electric current, which is then directed to the electrodes near the wound to speed up the healing process. Refer to the image below to understand the construction of this bandage.
Benefits
Cost-effective: More affordable than current treatments.
Easy to use: Ideal for home use, improving patient compliance.
Flexible design: Adapts to various wound shapes.
This technology could greatly benefit patients with chronic wounds, like diabetic foot ulcers, and reduce complications such as amputation. Future research will focus on optimizing the electric field and moving towards clinical trials.
This innovative bandage offers a promising solution for faster wound healing, potentially transforming wound care and improving patient outcomes.
