ROHM's New Three-Phase BLDC Gate Driver

ROHM’s new three-phase brushless DC motor gate driver uses its proprietary TriC3™ technology to minimise FET switching loss without compromising on electromagnetic interference (EMI). It is designed for motors that run on 12 to 48V power sources, meaning that applications include electric drills, industrial fans, air conditioners, and E-bikes.

The TriC3™ tech helps mitigate the usual trade-off between switching loss and EMI in power electronics. It dynamically monitors the voltage behaviour of external power FETs and uses that to alter gate drive current. Reduction in heat is achieved as a byproduct of reducing switching loss. The tech has seen a rough 35% reduction in heat output in comparison to ROHM’s standard gate-drive solutions.

The gate driver features a UQFN28 package and pin layout, which is commonly used in medium-voltage industrial equipment. The new product BD67871MWV-Z and its evaluation board BD67871MWV-EVK-003 are available through major online distributors with samples priced at $5.5 per unit before tax.
