12-Channel LED Driver

Diodes Incorporated has announced the release of the AL58221, a high-performance 12-channel constant-current LED driver designed to deliver precise and reliable LED control for a variety of applications. This driver features 12 open-drain outputs capable of handling up to 60mA per channel, with a voltage rating of 24V. It boasts exceptional LED current accuracy, with channel-to-channel variation typically within ±1% and a regulated output current tolerance of ±0.1%. Operating over a 3V to 5.5V input range, the AL58221 utilizes adaptive pulse density modulation (APDM) to reduce distortion and enhance visual refresh rates, making it ideal for indoor and outdoor LED signage, variable messaging signs (VMS), architectural lighting, and LCD backlighting.

The AL58221's advanced features include a 10MHz double-edge triggered data clock input for reduced EMI and a two-wire serial interface that manages grayscale data and configuration settings. The driver supports independent channel programming via a digital interface, allowing precise control over LED current and waveform selection. Its APDM technology achieves a visual refresh rate of over 1,000Hz at 16-bit and over 256kHz at 8-bit grayscale, minimizing flicker and enhancing display performance. The device also supports cascading of up to 1,030 units for large-scale applications.

Available in a thermally enhanced TSSOP-24EP package, the AL58221 is priced at $0.37 in 1,000-piece quantities, alongside the recently introduced AL58263, a 16-channel driver offering even higher resolution control.
