Smallest ESP32 Based DIY Drone

The ESP-FLY is a palm-sized drone powered by the XIAO ESP32S3 microcontroller, combining compact design with impressive performance. Measuring just 50 mm, its 3D-printed frame weighs only 4 grams, while a PVC alternative is also available. The drone’s custom 4-layer PCB integrates an MPU-6050 motion sensor, a 4-channel motor driver, and LEDs, all optimized for minimal weight and stable performance.

Powered by four coreless motors generating 17 grams of thrust each, the ESP-FLY achieves a thrust-to-weight ratio of 2.7:1, enabling smooth flight even in windy conditions. Controlled via a smartphone app over Wi-Fi, it eliminates the need for a traditional transmitter. The firmware, based on Espressif’s open-source ESP-Drone project, supports real-time telemetry and advanced flight modes.

For FPV enthusiasts, a 3-gram micro camera can be added, offering a live video feed with a range of over 100 meters. The drone flies for approximately 5.5 minutes on a 250 mAh LiPo battery, with a control range of up to 50 meters. Its lightweight design, efficient electronics, and intuitive controls make the ESP-FLY a standout DIY drone project.

We are happy to know that our project, Low-cost Drone using ESP32, at Circuit Digest has been a great inspiration and has contributed to the evolution of this tiny drone. The ESP-FLY highlights how far microelectronics and DIY drone technology have come, showcasing the potential for innovation in compact, accessible projects.
