Nordic Semiconductor has acquired its longtime partner, Memfault Inc., a cloud platform company. This acquisition results in something that’s the first of its kind: a complete chip-to-cloud platform managing connected devices across their entire lifecycle. Nordic now offers hardware, software, and cloud services as one integrated solution.
With this new platform, Nordic is shifting from just a hardware supplier to a full solution provider, speeding up product development and time-to-market. Products that use this platform will get ongoing software updates to enhance security, performance, power usage, and other features. Device observability, management, and over-the-air (OTA) updates are Memfault’s areas of expertise. The company’s tech will see integration into Nordic’s current products and cloud platform called nRF Cloud, an integration that will allow customers to interact continuously with the millions of devices already deployed in the field.
The combined platform seeks to support connected devices as they grow smarter with edge AI and as regulations like the EU Cyber Resilience Act evolve. The Memfault platform, in addition to supporting Nordic’s chips, will continue to help customers using other hardware. Nordic believes that this merger will help customers reduce costs and development time, and improve product management over its lifetime.
