With the intent to completely change the consumer electronics landscape, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly shared plans to launch 100 million AI-powered devices designed in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive. The announcement follows OpenAI’s acquisition of io, an AI startup co-founded by Ive, said to be valued at $6.5 billion.
The upcoming product is a fundamentally different upgrade over a smartphone or AR headset to reduce screen time and offer a more natural engagement with artificial intelligence through contextual awareness. The device is expected to counter challenges faced by similar attempts in the space, such as Humane AI Pin, which faced backlash for usability issues. The focus is set to be on passive, ambient intelligence over visual interfaces.
From a hardware perspective, the product appears to be heavily reliant on advancements in edge AI processing and sensor fusion. The device should house multiple sensors and AI accelerators capable of real-time perceptual intelligence. Industry observers speculate that OpenAI could partner with custom chipmakers or leverage existing AI SoCs to meet performance demands.
Altman described the initiative as “a chance to do the biggest thing we’ve ever done as a company”. OpenAI has not confirmed specifics around the recording and transmission of user data, which raises privacy concerns that may attract consumer scrutiny near launch. Further details are likely to emerge as development advances toward the projected 2026 release.
