The Netherlands-based global semiconductor design and manufacturing firm NXP Semiconductors is reportedly augmenting its investments in India to boost research and development (R&D) for a period of three to five years. Media reports also indicate that the company is also looking forward to a partnership in an effort to set-up a new wafer fabrication unit and a testing and packaging facility.

The company also mentioned that as soon as the design linked incentive (DLI) begins for global firms, they will be applying for it. The company is already in discussions with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to avail itself of the scheme. Hitesh Garg, India Country Manager of Dutch-headquartered NXP Semiconductors, told Moneycontrol, "In the last three years, we have almost doubled our R&D. I see that the same trend will continue for the next three years, or three to five years."

Moreover, the company is also aiming to develop system design, artificial intelligence, software, and hardware competencies. "We are looking at all possibilities for how we continue strengthening our R&D in this region to stay ahead of our competition," added Garg. Currently, around 4000 engineers are employed by the company in India in various locations like Pune, Noida, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

According to Garg, the R&D centers in India are now focusing on developing artificial intelligence to have more cutting-edge solutions for various applications, including automotive. "We are using all the possible manufacturing facilities in the ecosystem [gloally]. We are looking very actively in India. But there is no partnership that we have publicly announced yet…We try to see what best fits our strategy regarding manufacturing nodes and capabilities," Garg further added.
