Nirmala Sitharaman visited Tata Electronics’ Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Centre that’s currently under development in Jagiroad, Assam. During her visit, she highlighted the promise that Assam shows and encouraged students and entrepreneurs to be part of its technological journey. She also praised the state’s foresight and proactive approach, noting the significance of the semiconductor manufacturing unit that it has set up.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked her for her support in making the project happen. Tata Electronics’ CEO, Randhir Thakur, gave an update on the project and drew attention to the employment opportunities on the horizon. After operations begin, it is expected to handle 48 million chips per day and create 15,000 jobs directly and 11,000 to 13,000 jobs indirectly. At the event, the Union Minister and the Chief Minister planted red sandal saplings at the OSAT Centre, honouring the late JN Tata.
This project, established with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, is expected to become functional by April 2026. It’s been roughly four years since the inception of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021, and the country has already come a long way and is shaping up to be a formidable player in the space.
