More  discussions are going on with Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat and Karnataka governments for setting up the facilities

Union minister for electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw has now told the media that in the coming few months, the country will be furnished with three new semiconductor fab facilities with an approximate investment between $8-12 billion. Along with AMD’s launch of an international design center in Bengaluru, the minister added that more discussions are going on with Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat and Karnataka governments for setting up the facilities.

It is highly expected that there will be at least two better proposals for OSAT and fabrication units. "This sector, a new industry for the country, will grow as a major contributor to the entire developing manufacturing base of electronics, telecom and defense electronics,” Vaishnaw further added. For instance, Micron Technology announced its plan of investment back in June 2023, and the construction of the faculty already commenced in September. According to the experts, this swift development has uplifted immense confidence in India’s semiconductor mission.

AMD’s new design center in Bengaluru will employ around 3,000 engineers who will focus exclusively on the development and design of semiconductor technology that comprises machine learning, 3D stacking, and artificial intelligence. This design center is just a part of AMD’s announcement of $400 million investment in the nation for the coming five years.

According to AMD spokesperson, the new R&D is a part of center of excellence for the development of various products across high-performance CPUs for the data center and PCs, gaming GPUs (graphics processing unit ), and adaptive SoCs (system-on-chip) and FPGAs (field-programmable gate arrays) for embedded devices. The design center commenced way back in 2004 and as of now, only 25 percent of AMD’s international workforce is there in the country.

“India’s semiconductor program launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi lays strong emphasis on supporting the design and talent ecosystem for semiconductors. AMD setting up its largest design center in Bengaluru is a testament to the confidence global companies have in India," Vasihnaw further added.
