The Morigaon semiconductor plant by TSAT, with a Rs. 27000 crore investment, will produce 48 million chips daily, creates around 28000 job opportunities and enhance India’s global semiconductor competitiveness.
India’s vision of becoming a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing is gaining momentum with the establishment of a cutting-edge semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT). This facility, developed with an investment of Rs. 27000 crores, is poised to produce up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily using advanced packaging technologies like flip chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP). Scheduled for completion by mid-2025, it is designed to support critical sectors such as automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications and consumer electronics, aligning with India’s growing demand for locally manufactured chips. This announcement was made in a government report on November 17, 2024.
Beyond its technological significance, the Morigaon facility is a major social and economic initiative for the region. It is expected to generate 15000 direct and 11000-13000 indirect jobs, providing employment opportunities and driving economic growth in Assam and nearby areas. The facility’s high-capacity production will provide to both domestic and international markets, enhancing India’s presence in the global semiconductor value chain. By reducing reliance on imports and boosting exports, the project strengthens India’s self-reliance in the semiconductor sector while creating a robust foundation for long-term growth.
This development is part of India’s broader Semicon India program, launched in 2021 with a financial outlay of ₹76000 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The program focuses on building a sustainable semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem. Alongside the Morigaon facility, other projects such as those in Gujarat and Mohali reflect the government’s commitment to strengthen a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem. Incentives under schemes like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and initiatives for packaging, assembly and testing contribute to this goal. The Morigaon unit is evidence to India’s dedication to achieving technological leadership, economic resilience and global competitiveness in the semiconductor domain.
