I work in a large kitchen with a lot of large microwave ovens. one of the waiters brought a meter to work and showed how the m'wave ovens put out a lot of energy outside of the oven even when they were turned off, and much more when running. is it possible to build something that i could put in my pocket or wear that would protect me, or nullify that microwave energy around me as i work.

PermalinkIt is ture that Microwave oven emits a lot of energy. They emit microwaves which is used to heat the food by breaking its di-electric medium. But these owens are very safe so you should not worry much about it.
I am not sure what meter your friend used to measure energy, the frequency of microwaves in a microwave oven is normally 2.4GHz it is same frequency used by your Wi-Fi routers so it is always going to be around you and is nothing to be worried about. Also microwave owen itself has a shielding to not let these waves outside and by no chance these ovens will emit waves when they are not used.
If you are still worried you can use EMF RF shielding wraper around your owen to prevent the waves from coming out.
