Hi I want to build a sound pressure level meter using the atmega164p. I am unsure where to start. I know I need a sound sensor connected to an amplifier how would I decide on the right components for this? Please get back to me. Thanks.
Thanks for the reply. Im doing a Uni project so I would have to do go through the hard route of doing the amplfication myself. Not too sure where to start on the circuit. I was thinking of using a microphone or sound sensor with an opamp maybe tl071 (or anything) as you were saying to provide the gain but im not sure how to do this. The next task I need to achieve is to design a PCB of the circuit so an amplfier with a microphone or sound sensor on a PCB together. Do you know of any circuits like this I could use and any sound sensors or microphones that could work with the opamp? I will then send the signal to the microcontroller which is atmega 164p.
There are different type of sound sensor modules available for arduino or other microcontroller modules.
You can take any one asper your requirement.
But my advice is to use SEN-12642 from sparkfun. It is really a good sound level monitoring module with proper documentation for integration related purposes.
Have a look.
he SPL meter is an instrument that determines the sound level by measuring the sound level pressure. Sound enters the SPL meter by means of a microphone input. The sound is then evaluated within the SPL meter and measurement values in decibels are displayed. An SPL meter form PCE Instruments is manufactured in line with the highest industrial standards. Moreover, such a decibel or SPL meter is lightweight and easy to use. you will find an industrial standard SPL meter. With a portable SPL meter, you can carry out measurements quickly to gain control of a situation or set the noise meter to take timed measurements. The SPL meter can also be permanently installed for applications where constant measurements must be taken.
Noise is a very versatile parameter and cannot be defined exactly and clearly. It is not possible to give a universal answer to the question as to what noise is and how much noise is tolerable. Noise is not a physical term but a subjective conception. What noises and sounds are perceived as disturbing or even painful depends very much on the individual person that judges the situation. Since noise is perceived differently by different persons, an SPL meter is necessary to obtain a measurement result which is objective and expressed in numerical terms. Sound pressure levels have already been stated in decibels (dB) some decades ago. Values from 0 to 130 dB can be measured and displayed by means of a sound level meter or SPL meter.

A sound level meter is used for acoustic measurements. It is commonly a hand-held instrument with a microphone. The best type of microphone for sound level meters is the condenser microphone, which combines precision with stability and reliability.

PermalinkWell, if this is a serious project other than hobby, go for proper sound detection sensor that wil provide SPL in accurate form of dB. You can easily genarate the curve using microcontroller unit.
Otherwise, a microphone based op-amp circuit that will provide proper 5x or 10x gain could be a helpfull. In such case mic spec is required as per how much pressure you need to accept in the system. Then increasing the sensitivity using op-amp. You need a proper ADC for this to achieve. The circuit will a bit complex due to the noise factor in the op-amp and the microphone side. However, proper sallen key filter will be helpful to reduce pickup noise. Not sure about the op amp.
What is your planning about the circuit?
